When Should You Change Your Filter Media?

Mar 11, 2019 | Tips

Different media have different life-spans, but there are some basic guidelines to keep in mind. If you’re struggling to maintain clear water and everything else is normal, it may be time to change your filter.

  • Cartridge filter life-spans can vary widely, anywhere from 1–2 weeks for smaller cartridges to 1–2 years for larger ones. Always follow the manufacture’s recommendation for cartridges. .
  • For sand filters, the sand should be replaced every 3–5 years. Alternative media such as glass may last longer. Again, follow the manufacturer’s recommendation.
  • Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters usually need to be recharged after each backwashing. Thorough backwashing removes about 80–90% of the DE. New DE must be added to replace what is lost.
